Concrete Mix Proportions (IS 456:2000)
Concrete Mix Design is the process of finding the right proportions of cement, sand, and aggregates to achieve the target strength. According to IS 456:2000, "Nominal Mix Concrete" is used for grades up to M20.
1. Dry Volume Factor
Concrete shrinks when water is added. We take 1.54 as the dry volume factor (54% extra) to account for the voids in sand and aggregate.
2. Water-Cement Ratio
For M20, the standard W/C ratio is 0.50. This means for every 50kg bag of cement, 25 litres of water is required.
Site Engineer Note: The results provided are for nominal mixes. For high-strength concrete (M30 and above), a Design Mix as per IS 10262 must be performed in a laboratory.
